April 2nd

Well it has been an emotional and busy two weeks.
Summer came to an end and the big orange taxi – the AA – came and took almost everyone away. It was hard to say goodbye to everyone I have shared the most incredible summer with but it particularly hard to say goodbye to my Wing Man Lisa and my good friend Chris. I will miss them both but e-mail and phones are wonderful inventions which make the world a much smaller place these days.

This has been a truly amazing summer and I have so many memories from it. It has been an adventure of a lifetime and it will remain in my heart forever.
Our farewell dinner featured a 50’s theme and Lisa and Petie even built a replica Wurlitzer for the evening, complete with lights and film screen which showed the movie “Grease”. It was a great night and I think everyone had a good time.

With the final wave to Bloo and Tricky in the last helicopter the summer officially over. It was a subdued winter crew who gathered at the bar that evening to contemplate the long winter ahead.
After a few days of settling into our winter life though things are going well. Our winter crew is a great one and it will be a fabulous winter.

The winter started with a blizz that lasted 2 days and made going to and from work quite tricky.
Friday night drinks over at the new Mag Obs Hut had to be abandoned so we gathered at the bar in Hawaiian shirts and played surf DVD’s on the Wurlitzer screen.
Earlier in Comms we had received a distress call from Petie who had gone to the green store for supplies for our Friday night nibbles and had an encounter with a rogue piece of sheet steel that had broken loose in the 80knot winds and was causing havoc in the main street. Comms to the rescue, we called in the boys to come to Pete’s assistance and they managed to secure the rogue steel and avoid any damage to life, limbs and equipment in the process. Well done lads!

Saturday arvo saw Petie and I at the climbing wall. It is good to have Petie down here as we both love to get out and about and do stuff. I discovered rock climbing in Hobart and I really love it. I will be giving the wall a workout all winter and when I go home I will find a climbing club and continue out in the open on real rocks. In the mean time Petie is going to impart his knowledge and teach me the skills I need.

Our first Saturday dinner as a winter team was a good one, with many of us sitting and chatting over a few bottles of red into the wee small hours.
Later this week I am off to Browning for 4 days. Petie, John, Chris and I will be laying the cane line down from Casey to Browning. But I will fill you in on that next week.
Till then, have a good one.
Trace x
