A week at work 3 - 9th April

Now I know most of you think all I do is go out on Jolly’s down here in the cold old Antarctic. But that not true at all. It’s just that my trips and adventures are far more exciting than work to write about. But I have been asked about my work so I will start filling you in on a little of what I do actually do down here as a Comms Tech.
This week has been a pretty big one.
Andrew and I had to install a new system into the Anaresat to convert RS232 to RS485 so the monitor system could speak to the Anaresat system. Not such a hard task I hear you engineers out there saying. Nope, wouldn’t think so would you? Well you would be so wrong on that score, especially when the cables we were sent were wired incorrectly! Doh!!!
Every job down here takes so much longer than would normally take. You can’t just run down to Tricky Dickies for a spare cable or a part if you need one. The last ship has been and gone and we have nothing but what is in the cupboard until the next one arrives. At this stage we don’t even know when that is because the shipping schedule is not due for quite some time.
We also had to install and set up a new computer for the Anaresat as well. At least that was a job that can’t go wrong. ;o]
I had a day as the slushy, which is always fun. I enjoy working in the kitchen with Robbie, our chef. He is a top bloke and a mate and we have lots of fun together. After slushy was over at about 7pm Robbie and I kicked back with a bottle of vodka over a few games of pool and had a bit of a relaxing evening with Led Zeplin for company. All good fun.
We have a new field store that is being built as one of the major Casey projects this year. So Andrew and I had to run all the Cat5 cable throughout the new field store before all the walls are put up. Then we had to punch it through a wall that is 2.5 metres thick into the Dieso workshop next door, where the Comms box lives. That is a job that took a few days. It is always fun doing installation work. I enjoy it. It can be frustrating, but it is a nice change.
