Wilkes - First trip off station

My first trip Off Station was over to Wilkes by boat for a few hours on Boxing Day. This is a 4 minute boat ride or 30 minutes on quads. It is literally on the point opposite the site where Casey station now resides.
Wilkes was originally owned by the Americans. We took it over when they left and manned it for 13 odd years I think. Then the Old Casey Station was built and we moved to that site, not far from the present day station. It is a heritage listed site, though I am not so sure that is not just a ploy to not spend the dollars on cleaning the place up. It really is a bit of a mess and quite a tip. In the old days there was no heed at all paid to the Environment and the Human Impact of us on the surrounding countryside. It is a bit of a disgrace as far as I am concerned that is - all these years later- still a tip. Granted, leave all the buildings and structure alone, but clean up the area. How on earth do you heritage list rubbish for goodness sake?
In saying that it is a great place to visit and have a poke around.
